Parking is a contentious issue in Whitby! Here we try and provide some advice on where to park depending on the time of year, your circumstances, and the type of holiday you want to have.

There is no public parking in old Whitby, and recent permit schemes have restricted the places where you can park. Henrietta Street isn’t a through road, and is usually very quiet – so there should be no issue driving up to the cottage to unload upon arrival. You access via the cobbles of Church Street, which can be exciting when there are lots of pedestrians around, cars do have a right of way though!. We have had friends following a sat nav that instructed them to drive down from the Abbey alongside the 199 steps. This is not a viable option and should be avoided at all costs!!!

Where do we park?

There is free parking further along Church Street past the Fleece pub, be cautious as the first section is 2 hours only, then it becomes free parking without restriction.

Positives – Free, Flat walk to Henrietta Street. Negatives – small number of spaces, often full at busy times of the year.

If you follow Church street, and then turn left up Green Lane, and left again on to The Ropery there are a number of unrestricted spaces. The further you can get back towards the Abbey, the better. There is a cut through down the steps through Caedmons trod back to Church Street, or you can walk along to the Abbey and down the 199 steps.

Positives – Free, usually there are available spaces, interesting walk back to Henrietta Street with great views. Negatives – The walk is down a number of steps and isn’t appropriate if you aren’t fit. At busy times there may be limited spaces, and you could end up with a long walk back to the cottage.
